Movement for a healthy spine

Genetics.  Postural habits. Ergonomics in the workplace/home. Stress. Anxiety. Biomechanics. Slight shifts here and there when you move into a pose in yoga. How you move in other activities.  Hypomobility.  Hypermobility.  Range of motion. All plays into the health and wellbeing of the spine and all it supports.

A healthy spine is critical for maintaining a healthy body.

Through personal experience with chronic back issues, Kari developed a series workshop with her physical therapist, Allison Harney, PT, DPT that explores the 4-parts of the spine.

You will be guided through a deeper look into the anatomy and biomechanics of the spine as a basis to give you the tools to evaluate spine function and how it applies to your yoga practice. This series explores spine mobility, common injuries, common types of dysfunction and how to support these issues within a yoga context both preventatively and for injury recovery.

This series is offered annually at Sellwood Yoga but is available upon request.

For weekly exploration, Kari teaches Yoga for a Healthy Spine every Monday at 8:30 AM at Sellwood Yoga (in person and livestream).

What People Are Saying

“I just finished Kari’s spine health class which focused on the thoracic region. The movements she took us through were the best I’ve had for that area of the back. I was rear-ended several years ago with an injury to my left scapular muscles. I went through PT and have done tons of strength training to help that region. I’ve had difficulty isolating the area. Today, the block work was absolutely incredible. I actually felt those lowered scapulars engaging! Great Class!”

I so appreciate your PT slant to how you approach your teaching. You have incorporated what you have learned from your own health providers into a thoughtful, accessible, and safe yoga practice that compliments my current path to rehabilitating a chronic injury. Thank you for your attention to detail.

I was blown away by your class today. You took me into pose work that I didn’t think was possible. You showed me how to balance! You made me think of different parts of my body to engage that I wouldn’t have thought had anything to do with a pose. This is now my favorite class!
